Long a dietary staple of the people of Asia, Africa, and the Pacific Islands, coconut oil has been used for both food and health care. It has been used in Ayurvedic herbalism for 4,000 years and it is a natural oil, lower in calories than most oils. Coconut oil is composed of medium-chain triglycerides (MCTs), which are less likely to be stored in the body as fat than are long-chain triglycerides (LCTs). Combined with essential fatty acids, it is a perfect addition to an overall healthy lipid program.*

Coconut oil is a natural saturated oil that has been used in Ayurvedic Herbalism for almost four thousand years. Modern research now proves that coconut oil is healthy, supports energy quickly, and is less likely to store as fat in the body. Coconut oil also contains the fatty acid lauric acid, which not only supports immune health, but also supports healthy metabolism.
Coconut oil is composed of medium chain triglycerides (MCTs), so it is much less likely to be stored in the body as fat. It is used by the body as fuel for immediate energy needs. Long-chain triglycerides (LCTs) from hydrogenated, unsaturated, or polyunsaturated vegetable oils often get stored as fat that may lead to weight gain. Polyunsaturated vegetable oils like corn, sunflower, canola or soy can oxidize in the body and go rancid, increasing the body’s unhealthy free radical load. Because coconut oil is a saturated vegetable oil, it can’t be oxidized and turned into a free radical. Unlike saturated fats in meat, it contains no cholesterol and cannot lead to cholesterol buildup in the blood.
Medium chain triglycerides (MCTs) from coconut oil boost metabolism because they are absorbed from the small intestine into circulation to the liver, quickly metabolizing into energy. Long-chain triglycerides (LCTs) are stored as fat. The MCTs in coconut oil are largely composed of lauric acid and caprylic acid which can also support healthy immune response by helping to maintain a healthy environment for the body’s own cells.
It can be used as a cooking oil replacement for preparing steak, chicken or fish. You can of course use it to flavor salads and vegetables, or you can blend it into smoothie drinks. It’s a healthy vegan substitute for butter or margarine on toast, and it is wonderful in baked goods.
Extra Virgin Coconut Oil is best when used as part of an overall healthy lipid program which means that you should also eat or supplement with essential fatty acids, EPA, DHA and GLA. An omega-3 supplement is a good companion to coconut oil softgels and especially helpful when you decrease the consumption of hydrogenated vegetable oils in your diet. *
